April happened and it’s already May! The weather is, in theory, getting warmer, and it’s really nice to see people outside more. I, too, have been spotted running (rather, very slowly jogging) through the neighborhood on some of our warmer days. With the nicer days coming up, it’s really important to breathe the fresh air, get some Vitamin D, and get moving.

If you’re just getting into some increased activity, ease into it. Walking has great cardio benefits. So if you’re just trying to get out there, start by going on two 10-minute walks a day. If that feels good and nothing hurts afterward, slowly increase the frequency or duration of the walks.

If you want to get into some running, I always recommend breaking into that slowly. A 5 minute walking warm-up, followed by 3 rounds of a 1 minute jog and 1 minute walk, and ending with a 5 minute walking cool-down is a great way to ease into running. And while I’ve been standing on the sidelines at my daughter’s soccer practices, I do a few squats, some lunges, walk up and down the sidewalk, and some walking single-leg deadlifts. Mostly it’s been to keep warm on some of the cooler days, but it keeps me moving instead of sitting on the bleachers.

Doing a few simple movements throughout the day are really quick ways to get healthy and active. When a simple walk doesn’t do it for you, you can incorporate some dumbbells and do some farmers or suitcase carries.
